April and May 2017 Book Clubs "Maude" by Donna Foley Mabry and "The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry" by Gabrielle Zevin

Greetings Book Club Members!      Tonight, June 22, at 6 PM, we have planned to meet at Natilie's Pizzeria for our next Women of Wisdom Book Club discussion. Hopefully, despite the weather we will draw enough members to share thoughts on the title The Book That Matters Most by Ann Hood.      Our April and May meetings were both well attended. In April, we met at Natilie’s Pizzeria. We welcomed Becky back to the fold, our migratory member. Barb D., Ginnie, Sharon, Lori, Cheryl, Jody (back from God knows where), and I were also in attendance to discuss Maude by Donna Foley Mabry, my book choice.  For the May meeting held at Anna Marie’s Winery and Café, Becky, Barb D., Barb K., Cheryl, Ginnie, Lori, Sharon, Mary Beth, and I were present to discuss The Storied Life of A.J. Fikrey , Barb D.’s pick. It was a long time - no see - Mary Beth, our entrepreneurial member, so we were also pleased that she could pencil us into her calendar! ...

March 2017 Book Club "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman

Hi Book Club Members, March’s meeting at Natilie’s Pizzeria for discussion of the novel A Man Called Ove was well attended and, as always, enjoyable. Barb D., Barb K., Cheryl, Ginnie, Lori, Kathy, Sharon, and I examined the many eccentricities of Fredrik Backman’s main character, Ove. No matter how crabby and cratchity a man Ove was described to be, we all understood his fragility and insecurity. And maybe even a little bit of an undefined behavioral disorder adds to Ove’s inexorable endearment.   Ove grew up “the hard way.” As a child, he lost his mother to cancer, and as a teen, he lost his father to tragedy. Life’s hardships, quite naturally, paved the way for the development of Ove’s severely pessimistic nature. Luckily for Ove, fate smiled on him the day he spotted the sun reflecting off a golden brooch pinned to the dress of Sonja, the woman who recognized Ove’s own shining treasure, his committed heart, and she agreed to become his wife. Throughout their marr...

February 2017 Book Club "The Walk" by Richard Paul Evans

Image
Hi All!         It’s spring! We officially made it through another winter. Thanks to our mutual friendship with books, we’re able to leave the blasé bleakness of Butler, at least in our heads, and travel to more interesting settings to survive our northern clime. Barb D., Barb K., Cheryl, Ginnie, Kathy, Lori, Sharon, and I all agree that Richard Paul Evans’ book The Walk was just the right escape we needed for February. It is a thoughtful, emotional, and in many ways cathartic novel that incited some of our members to read the remaining books in the series.      To summarize The Walk , the main character Alan Christofferson, an advertising mogul, loses everything that a man holds dear. First, he loses the love of his life, his wife and childhood sweetheart McKale, due to the repercussions of a serious accident.  While he is suffering through his wife’s condition and eventual death, his unscrupulous business partner Kyle has ...

January 2017 Book Club "Redbird Christmas" by Fannie Flagg

Image
Hi Everyone, Although Jodi is somewhere navigating a canoe through the jungles of the Amazon and Becky is sipping margaritas on a secluded tropical beach, our Women of Wisdom Book Club had a nice showing of members at January’s meeting. Along with myself, in attendance were Barb K., Cheryl, Ginnie, Lori, Sharon, and we welcomed back Barb Direnzo! Remember, once a book club member, always a book club member, we embrace all prodigal book clubbers! Come when you can and read the book, or not! January’s book was Fannie Flagg’s Redbird Christmas . Although, our club didn’t really agree with the title - the book has very little to do with Christmas. Okay, maybe the story did involve a redbird named Jack, and a miracle with redbirds that happened to take place on the day “after” Christmas. Redbird Christmas is more about Oswald Campbell, a chronically ill alcoholic, who moves to a remote town called Lost River in Alabama. There the warm air and sunshine, his doctor recommends, mig...
